
Polycysteus-ovariumsyndroom (PCOS) is de meest voorkomende hormonale aandoening bij vrouwen en treft 3% tot 15% van alle vrouwen, afhankelijk van de diagnostische criteria. Kenmerken van het syndroom zijn te hoge niveaus van mannelijke hormonen (hyperandrogenisme), abnormale ovulatie en afwijkingen in de ovaria ('polycystes' en/of ovariumvolume van >10 ml).1 Het syndroom is sterk genetisch bepaald, maar staat tegelijkertijd onder invloed van omgevingsfactoren, in de eerste plaats factoren die ontstaan geven aan het metabool syndroom (metS). PCOS is de meest voorkomende oorzaak van onvruchtbaarheid.2 Dat brengt ons onmiddellijk bij een paradox: een veelvoorkomende en erg genetisch bepaalde eigenschap die de voorplanting belemmert.
